One more Fun Winter Activity for Families!

We hope you enjoyed the indoor fun ideas that we've shared over the last week! It can be tough to get enough exercise during the colder months! Here is one more fun idea for you:

What have your toes done for you lately?

For this game, you'll need a big pile of coins on a plastic or paper plate, and an empty plate for each player.

Players have 60 seconds to grab as many coins from the pile as they can and transfer them to the empty plate. But they can only use their toes on one foot!

At the end of 60 seconds, players add up all the change on their plate. The player with the most money wins!

Winter Fun for Families Activity: The Scoop Game

Get the scoop!

This game is for 2 or more players and should be played outside or in an open area.

To play, you need 2 plastic one-gallon milk jugs and a beanbag or small ball.

To make the scoops, carefully cut the bottoms off the milk jugs. (You may need a grown-up to help you with this part.)

Using your scoops and the beanbag, begin to play catch with your partner. Each time you catch the beanbag, take one step backwards.

See how far apart you and your partner can go and still catch the beanbag.

Winter Fun for Families Activity

This game is for 4 or more players and should be played in an open area on a soft surface.

To play, you need one sleeping bag for each team and something to wiggle around, like plastic cones. (You could use empty soda bottles for cones.)

First, set up a course by putting 3 cones in different places on the playing field.

Split into two even teams.

On the word "go," the first players of each team get into their sleeping bags and wiggle around the cones. (It works best if players hold the sleeping bag with their hands and use their arms and elbows to help them crawl.)

When players get back to their team, they tag the next person in line.

The first team to finish wins.

More Indoor Winter Fun for Families!

A slithery game of tag... This game is for 4 or more players and should be played in an open area.

To play, mark off an area to be your playing field.

One player is the snake. That person has to crawl around and move like a snake.

The snake tries to tag the other players, who run around trying to stay away from the snake.

If the snake tags you, then you become a snake, too. (That means you have to move like a snake and try to tag the other players!)

Snakes and runners are not allowed to go outside the playing area.

The last runner left is the winner.

Another Fun Winter Activity for Families!

This is a wild and goofy game but great fun. Each teen should bring three pairs of socks WITH THEIR NAMES CLEARLY ATTACHED TO THEM. Using a rope and a tarp, divide the room in half, as high up as you can go. Put half the teens on each side of the divider with their socks rolled up, like baseballs. On the word GO the teens throw the socks over the divider as fast as they can. This round is only 45 seconds, so they must move fast. While they are throwing, toss in two beach balls, and tell them they are worth double points. Give them a ten second warning and then say "stop". Count the socks on each side of the divider. The team with the least number of socks - and beach balls - wins. Second round is 1 minute, third round is 90 seconds.

Today's Fun Winter Activity for Families!

Using yarn, or other similar product, string the yarn across, up and down a room or hallway to make a laser beam matrix. Have kids try to get to the other side without touching any of the string. If they touch the string they must start over. You can time each child to see who can do it the quickest or have an object, such as a ball or large book, with which two players work together to get themselves and the item to the other side.

This week in Recipes, Classes, and News!

This week, at our class 'Kick the Diet, Keep Your Resolution', we prepared and tasted a delicious barley salad. Everyone loved it and we think you will, too! My favorite part was the Feta cheese! The recipe is here.

The Daily Herald stopped by the beautiful Springville Library to check out the first of a series of classes we are doing there. Here is the article they wrote about it.

Some of the people in the class were also hoping we'd post some of the information we shared about how much of each food group we should all be getting! So here are a couple of the slides to remind us all how much to get each day from the different food groups:

Fun Winter Activities for Families!

Looking for ideas on keeping active during the cold weather? Each day for the next week, we'll be sharing a fun game idea! Check back with us or follow our blog to get the latest game idea!

Today's Fun Winter Activity:

Make or draw (using chalk if outside, yarn, tape or other similar items) a squigley line at least 20 feet long. Make two teams of at least two people. Teams stand at opposite ends of the squigley line and at same time start running on top of the line until they meet somewhere near the middle. Then the two players play one game of rock paper scissors. The person who wins the rock paper scissors keeps going on the line until the next player on the opposite team stops them again and so on until the player is either beat in rock paper scissors or until they reach the very end of the squigley line by the opposite team. The players who lose rock paper scissors while on the line do not advance but return to the back of their teams line and the next player starts running. To win the game all players of one team must pass to the opposite team's side.
